Coolum climbs. From the beach the streets rise quickly onto the ridges around Mount Coolum, and the suburb’s driveways collect both of the coast’s hard problems at once: salt air from the front, grades from behind. It is exactly the combination washed stone was made for, grip on the slope, and a sealed surface the sea air cannot chalk away.
Two suburbs in one
Down on the flat beach streets, Coolum work looks like classic coastal renewal: older slabs replaced with pale blends that suit weatherboard and render, pool surrounds that grip wet feet, patios opening to the afternoon breeze. Up the hill it becomes slope work, bolder reveals for traction, crossfall and drainage designed before the pour, and the odd pump day where the truck cannot stand on the grade. Both halves run on the same finish standard and the same published rates.

Coolum’s light is hard and bright off the water, and the hill’s houses look down on their own driveways, a viewing angle most suburbs never have. Surfaces seen from above reward an even reveal and a considered blend; pearls and sands lift the beach streets, while the ridge builds with their darker cladding palettes carry storm and charcoal tones from the library well. Ground shifts from beach sand to shallow slope soils over rock as you climb, a base preparation question answered at the measure.
Booked around the weather
Exposed aggregate’s wash window respects no schedule but the weather’s, and Coolum’s exposed ridges feel a summer storm first. Sunshine Coast Council and the crossover in Coolum
Sunshine Coast Council runs a two tier system for the crossover, the strip of driveway inside the road reserve. A crossover that satisfies every item on the council’s self-assessment checklist needs no permit: check, build to the standard drawing, done. One that misses any item, wrong width, too close to a pit or pole, non-standard geometry, needs the council’s written approval before any work begins, and the application fee is set by the council each financial year.
Two details matter for this site’s work in particular. First, the council’s accepted urban crossover materials expressly include coloured and exposed aggregate concrete, so the decorative finish can run unbroken from the garage to the road edge; raised stamped patterns are not accepted. Second, replacing or modifying an existing crossover counts as construction, so a driveway renewal that changes the crossover’s profile, surface or dimensions is assessed the same way a new one is. The judgement call on which tier your job falls into is made at the site measure and put in writing on the quote.
