The paste sets the mood
The cement paste is the background colour between the stones, and it does more work than the stone does. Pale pastes lift a facade and shed heat, useful around pools and on north-facing frontages. Darker pastes ground a light house and forgive stains and shade. It is the first decision because it is the one you see from the street.
The stone sets the character
Stone size and mix decide whether the surface reads fine and even or bold and pebbled. Driveways typically carry 10mm blends for a tight, sweep-clean surface; feature areas can go larger and rounder. Single-colour stone reads architectural; mixed river blends read softer and more natural.
The seal sets the depth
Sealer is where the colour arrives. Matte and satin seals deepen the blend while keeping grip, and they are the standing recommendation for driveways, pools and anywhere that sees wet feet. The seal is also the maintenance story: a recoat keeps the surface at its best, on a cycle of a few years depending on traffic and sun.

How do we choose an exposed aggregate colour?
Against the fixed elements of the house, not in isolation. Render, roof, garage door and window joinery set the palette; the blend either harmonises with them or deliberately contrasts. The site measure includes that conversation at your kerb, where the light is the light the driveway will actually live in.
Can we see real samples before deciding?
Yes, and close decisions should always come down to a physical sample. The swatches on this page are drawn as a guide to tone; a sample board shows the true stone, wet and dry, sealed and unsealed. The blend on your quote is confirmed on sample, never from a screen.
Can you match an existing exposed aggregate surface?
Usually close, rarely perfect, and honesty about that up front beats disappointment later. Stone supply changes over the life of a surface and sun ages paste colour. Matching works best when the new pour meets the old at a natural break, a joint, a path edge or a garden line, rather than mid-surface.
Matte or gloss sealer?
Matte or satin for most homes. It brings the colour up without turning the driveway into a mirror, and it keeps grip in the wet. High gloss wet-look sealers exist and suit some contemporary builds, but around pools and on slopes the matte wet-area seal is the standing recommendation.
Do estate covenants limit colour choice?
They mostly limit finish type rather than colour: Aura and Harmony generally do not permit plain or undecorated grey concrete, and exposed aggregate satisfies the decorative requirement. Some releases go further on palette, so the design guidelines for your release are read before the blend is locked.
