Caloundra runs from headland beaches to the edge of Aura, and its driveways tell the suburb’s whole story: original beach-house slabs from decades past, solid brick-era concrete going tired, and new builds working to modern streetscapes. A large share of our Caloundra work is renewal, breaking out a cracked or drummy old surface and replacing it with washed stone that suits what the house has since become.
Renewal is the local specialty
An old Caloundra driveway rarely fails structurally all at once; it fails visually long before that, stained, patched and pale. Replacement in exposed aggregate resets the frontage in one move: out with the old slab, base recompacted, and a new 25 MPa pour washed to an even reveal. Where the crossover is being replaced too, that counts as construction under the council’s rules, so the checklist is assessed and the answer stated on the quote. Removal of the old surface is priced as its own line, honestly, in the estimator.
Salt, sun and stone choice
The closer to Kings Beach and Bulcock, the harder the environment works on every outdoor surface. Salt air asks for a sealed finish that can be recoated rather than repainted, and the coastal light rewards paler blends that lift rather than glare. Ground near the water is sand over older dune profiles, free draining and predictable once properly compacted; a brief fact, handled fully at the measure.
Pools and holiday houses
Caloundra’s pool culture keeps surrounds busy, particularly on holiday-let properties where the surface has to grip wet feet all summer and photograph well in every listing. Pale, cool blends from the library are the standing recommendation around water here. Rates across the suburb are the published ones: driveways and patios $135 to $150 per m2, surrounds $140 to $180.
Sunshine Coast Council and the crossover in Caloundra
Sunshine Coast Council runs a two tier system for the crossover, the strip of driveway inside the road reserve. A crossover that satisfies every item on the council’s self-assessment checklist needs no permit: check, build to the standard drawing, done. One that misses any item, wrong width, too close to a pit or pole, non-standard geometry, needs the council’s written approval before any work begins, and the application fee is set by the council each financial year.
Two details matter for this site’s work in particular. First, the council’s accepted urban crossover materials expressly include coloured and exposed aggregate concrete, so the decorative finish can run unbroken from the garage to the road edge; raised stamped patterns are not accepted. Second, replacing or modifying an existing crossover counts as construction, so a driveway renewal that changes the crossover’s profile, surface or dimensions is assessed the same way a new one is. The judgement call on which tier your job falls into is made at the site measure and put in writing on the quote.
